What is a keyword planner?
It is a free tool from Google to show the average searches of a keyword within a specific time. This tool is helpful for an SEO specialist to identify more targeted keywords. I am using Google keyword planner since last year to get more traffic for my site. I notice that it help me a lot and I am getting more traffic with time.
In this article, I will help you with how to use this tool to get more value on SEO. Google keyword planner is a free tool but before you use this tool, you have to sign up for Google ads. So just go to the Google ads page and register for it.
It is not necessary that you run the Google ads campaign but rather use the keyword planner tool. When you log in to your Google Adwords account then there are three icons on the left side of the page,
Click on the wrench icon then go to keyword planner options.
This page will show two tools as given below:
- Discover new keywords
- Get search volume and forecasts
You can use these two tools to help you get a more focused keyword for your business to acquire more traffic or generate more sales. These tools have many features like PPC or keyword bidding features but here you don’t consider these features if you are looking for keywords for SEO.
Now I will show you how we will use these tools to get more value for our website. Now we first go to click on the “Discover new keywords” tool. This tool will generate a list of new keywords related to your business.
Start with keywords
These words and phrases describe your core business and Google has huge data in its database about related keywords of different industries. You can enter more than one keyword in this field with a comma put after each keyword.
Start with a website
Adwords user can use this field but something it helps you to get more specific keywords using articles of the site.
Get search volume and forecasts
This tool is only helpful if you have already a list of keywords and you just want to know its search volume. This tool will not generate new keywords so here you put a list of keywords then it will show you its click, impressions, etc.
The difference between these two tools, the first tool shows you the results of related keywords while the second tool show you click and impression of a given set of keywords.
Filter and sort results
Now there are many options to filter given data, you can filter or sort data according to monthly searches or maximum searches.
On top of the page, there are four options that you can change according to your requirements to get more specific or broad data about your keywords.
You can target the audience of any country by changing this option or you can have also an option of the whole world.
This is also a very important option English is a default language for your keywords but if your target audience is Germany then it can choose the German language. Now it depends on you which language you choose to make a list of keywords.
If you want to advertise only on Google then set this option to Google or if want search partner as well which has other search engines.
You can set any time range but the best option is 12-month data.
