Charles Babbage, He was a professor of mathematics in Cambridge University. He had a privileged position in this institute. He was a very famous mathematician at that time. Charles Babbage a very interesting and beautiful gift to mankind in shape of digital computer. In 1833, he made a design of a computing device, which was called analytical engine. This was world first computer. This design was so powerful and best at that time, but could not construct at that time because the skill and technology required for the construction of this system became available after 100 years. In 1943, a machine was constructed in Harvard that was very similar to that of Charles Babbage’s design. The name of this machine was Harvard Mark 1.Analytical engine was a programmable, mechanical and digital machine. Today’s computer was electronic but at time, no electronic machine was available. Everything was done though mechanical process even computational. Analytical machine was capable of doing any type of calculation that do today’s computer. Analytical engine had input, output and processing capabilities. Charles Babbage had one female student who was mathematician. She had an interest in analytical machine and designed a program for it. So that was the world first program. So the world first programmer is called, Ada countess of lovelance. Ada was the most popular language and this language was designed by US department of defense in 70’s.There are three interesting features of a computer, which make a computer superior than a human being.1. Computer is very fast in calculations; billions of calculations are done in a split of second.2. Computer can store a huge amount of data in just a small size of hard disk.3. Computer does not bore; computer can work 24-hour a day and perform billions of calculation with high accuracy.There are some situations that computer does not perform very well and we human being are better than a computer;1. The image recognition of a computer is not very good as compared to human being.2. Computer lack the capabilities of producing innovative ideas.3. Computer cannot think but sometime you can consider it a thinking machine depending upon the situation.
